Ben Wheatley, Director of critically acclaimed gritty, dark British thrillers such as Kill List, Down Terrace and Sightseers, has a new film. It’s called A Field in England.
Scheduled for release early in July, A Field in England looks to be a hypnotic, disturbing micro-account of the Civil War. It stars Wheatley regular Michael Smiley as well as Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentleman, Psychoville) and Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh, Bunny and the Bull).
With bleak scenery and trippy, unconventional cinematography which exudes hopelessness and hysteria, the footage in this trailer is reminiscent of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Valhalla Rising.
Also similar to Valhalla Rising, a certain level of ethereality seems present. This could be the wild mushrooms glimpsed sending the characters a bit loopy, or maybe Wheatley has an even stranger addition to the story not fully revealed in this trailer?
We’ll have to wait and see, but we won’t have to wait long. And when it is released on Friday 5th July, you won’t have any excuse for missing it. A Field in England will be the first ever UK film released simultaneously in cinemas, on DVD, on Freeview TV and on VoD.
